Sketching with John Yancey
Sketching with John Yancey

John Yancey has provided us with his latest sketch. Inspired by the summer heat, this spontaneous concept sketch represents a summer pool house.  Although the video has been sped up, the original sketch was done in under 3 minutes, with the idea being to put ideas down quickly.  At the very beginning, a horizontal line is drawn to establish the viewer’s height.  From that reference line, all other heights such as walls and trees can be quickly estimated with reasonable accuracy.

In terms of sketching technique, notice that all movement is done by pivoting the elbow, not the wrist.

The pen used was a Pentel Sign Pen, and it is held with the fingers far back, which allows for more line variety, whether broad or thin.
